A snow-proof greenhouse is designed for gardens where snow, wind and winter weather place greater demands on the structure. Depending on the model, greenhouses in this category have maximum snow-load ratings starting at 200 kg/m², while selected models are rated for up to 450 kg/m². A higher rating does not make a greenhouse indestructible, but it provides a useful basis for comparing models intended for demanding winter conditions.

Panel thickness, frame material and profile dimensions vary between the different ranges. Do not choose a greenhouse based on the term “snow-proof” alone – always check its complete specifications.

What does the snow-load rating mean?

The snow-load rating indicates how much evenly distributed snow weight the structure is designed to withstand per square metre under the specified conditions.

Snow depth alone does not determine the load. Wet, compacted snow can be considerably heavier than fresh powder, while wind may cause snow to accumulate unevenly across the roof. Monitor the greenhouse during periods of snowfall and follow the winter guidance for the individual model.

Even with a reinforced greenhouse, you may need to remove accumulated snow. Doors, windows and automatic openers should also be secured correctly when preparing the structure for winter.

Reinforced frames and polycarbonate panels

Snow-proof greenhouses typically combine strong metal frames with lightweight polycarbonate panels. Depending on the model, the panels may be 4–6 mm thick.

Polycarbonate is impact-resistant, relatively easy to handle and less vulnerable to breakage than conventional greenhouse glass. The reinforced frame provides the additional strength required for higher snow and wind loads.

Some models have arched roofs that can help limit snow accumulation, while others use a more traditional shape with reinforced profiles. The right construction depends on the location, available space and level of weather exposure.

How do you choose the right greenhouse?

Choose a standard polycarbonate greenhouse if local conditions are relatively moderate and you mainly want a durable, low-maintenance greenhouse for seasonal cultivation.

Choose a snow-proof greenhouse if snow load, wind resistance and structural strength are important considerations. A glass greenhouse may be more suitable if transparency and a traditional appearance matter more than reinforced winter performance.

When comparing snow-proof models, consider:

• maximum snow and wind loads
• frame material and profile dimensions
• polycarbonate panel thickness
• greenhouse size and door dimensions
• included ventilation
• compatible extensions and accessories
• foundation and anchoring requirements

Also assess the location. A sheltered garden presents different conditions from an open or elevated site. Avoid placing the greenhouse where snow may fall from nearby roofs or where branches could damage the panels.

Growing conditions throughout the season

A high snow-load rating describes structural strength. It does not mean that the greenhouse is heated, frost-free or automatically suitable for winter cultivation.

Like other polycarbonate greenhouses, a reinforced model can help you start seedlings earlier, protect heat-loving crops during the season and continue growing selected plants later into autumn. Winter growing may require insulation, heating or additional light, depending on the plants and local climate.

Ventilation remains important during warm weather. Doors, ventilation windows and automatic openers can help regulate temperature and humidity inside the greenhouse.

Correct installation and winter care

A reinforced greenhouse can only perform according to its specifications when it is assembled and maintained correctly. Install it on a stable, level base, anchor it securely and follow every stage of the enclosed instructions.

Inspect the frame, panels, doors, windows and fixings regularly, particularly after strong winds or snowfall. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance and remove excessive or uneven snow accumulation when necessary.
