Carports – covered parking that fits your home and vehicle

A carport gives your vehicle a dedicated place under cover while keeping it easy to drive in and out. The roof shelters it from rain falling from above, direct sunlight and leaves, while the open sides allow air to circulate. Wind and driving rain can still reach the vehicle, so the level of shelter depends on the carport’s design and position.

Dancover offers carports in different sizes and materials, from single and double models to larger structures and carports with an integrated shed. The right choice depends on your vehicle, the space around your home and whether you also need storage.

Start with the vehicle and the available space

Measure the vehicle’s full length, width and height, including mirrors, roof bars or a roof box. Then check the carport’s external dimensions, clear entrance width and usable height. A structure may fit on your driveway without leaving enough room to park comfortably beneath it.

Allow space to open the doors, walk around the vehicle and manoeuvre safely when entering or leaving. If the carport will stand close to a wall, fence or boundary, check how that affects access on both sides. Think about future needs too: a larger car, a bike rack or a second vehicle may change the amount of space you require.

A single carport provides a straightforward parking space for one vehicle. A double carport can accommodate two cars or give you additional covered room for bicycles, a motorcycle or a trailer. For taller or longer vehicles, explore the XL carports, paying particular attention to the entrance height and the space between the posts.

Which material suits your home?

Wooden carports offer a traditional appearance that can work well alongside a house, fence or garden building. Some models can be painted or treated to suit their surroundings. Check how the timber is supplied and what protection it needs before and after assembly. Wood will require periodic care.

Aluminium carports often have a lighter, more contemporary appearance and generally need less upkeep. The range also includes metal structures with different finishes and construction details. Cleaning and occasional inspections are still necessary, particularly around joints, fixings and any damaged surface coating.

Roof design matters as much as frame material. Some models have polycarbonate panels that let daylight through, although the amount of light varies with the panels. Compare the roof material, panel thickness and any stated wind and snow loads in the specifications for each carport.

Would a carport with storage be useful?

A carport with an integrated shed combines covered parking with an enclosed place for bicycles, garden tools, tyres or other equipment. It can be a practical choice when you want these items near the car but have limited space for a separate garden shed.

Check the shed’s internal dimensions and door opening, not just the overall footprint of the structure. Make sure you can reach the storage door when a vehicle is parked. If you are considering side screens for additional shelter or privacy, confirm that they are available and compatible with the specific model. Screens may reduce exposure from one direction, but the parking area remains partly open.

If you need the whole space enclosed and lockable, compare a metal garage instead.

Plan the base and installation before ordering

Consider the route into the carport, the direction of approach and where rainwater from the roof will drain. Leave room to clean the structure and reach any gutters or drainage points.

The carport needs foundations and fixings suited to its design and the ground conditions. Requirements vary by model and may involve individual concrete footings or another specified base. Follow the product’s installation instructions rather than assuming an existing driveway will provide suitable anchoring.

Carport kits can include long beams, heavy posts and large roof panels. Check the assembly requirements in advance and arrange enough help, suitable tools and professional advice if you are unsure about the foundations or ground conditions.

Check weather ratings and local requirements

Wind and snow ratings differ between models. Read the specifications for the carport you intend to buy and make sure its installation and anchoring follow the instructions. Clear leaves and other debris from the roof and drainage areas, inspect the fixings periodically and deal with snow accumulation as directed in the product manual.

Planning requirements depend on where in the UK the carport will be built, its size and position, and the circumstances of the property. In England, some carports may fall within permitted development rights if the relevant conditions are met. Check the rules that apply to your property and contact your local planning authority before preparing the foundations if you are unsure.

The best carport is one you can park beneath comfortably, access easily and install correctly in the available space. Compare the vehicle clearance, materials, foundation requirements and weather ratings of the models that fit your home.
