Conservatories

Conservatories – Light, Shelter and Extra Space

A conservatory creates a bright, protected space between the house and garden. Transparent wall and roof panels allow plenty of natural light into the room while providing shelter from wind and rain.

Use your conservatory as a seating area, dining space, reading corner or a place for plants that benefit from additional warmth and shelter. Unlike a fully insulated extension, a lightweight conservatory is primarily designed to extend the outdoor season and create a comfortable transition between the home, patio and garden.

What can you use a conservatory for?

A conservatory is a flexible space that can be adapted to the way you use your home and garden. Add a table and chairs to create a bright dining area, or furnish it with lounge furniture for relaxing, reading or enjoying the garden view.

The natural light also makes a conservatory suitable for many plants. Combining furniture, pots and greenery can create an inviting space that works as both a sheltered seating area and a green extension of the garden.

The temperature inside will vary depending on the season, sunlight and ventilation. A conservatory should therefore not normally be treated as a conventional insulated living room unless the individual model is specifically designed for that purpose.

Conservatory or greenhouse – what is the difference?

A greenhouse is primarily designed for growing plants, while a conservatory is mainly intended as a sheltered space for people.

Both structures make good use of natural light and can provide favourable conditions for plants, but their main purposes are different. If cultivation is your priority, a greenhouse will usually be the natural choice. If you want a light-filled area for seating, dining and relaxing, with room for selected plants, a conservatory will generally be more suitable.

Lightweight materials and plenty of natural light

Dancover conservatories typically combine strong aluminium profiles with polycarbonate roof panels and transparent wall panels. The materials create a light, stable construction while allowing plenty of daylight into the room and maintaining a clear view of the garden.

Aluminium requires relatively little maintenance, while polycarbonate provides a practical combination of low weight and strength. Compared with traditional timber and glass structures, the components are easier to handle, making many models suitable for self-assembly.

Always check the specifications of the individual model, as panel materials, dimensions, ventilation options and construction details may vary.

Choosing the right size and location

Before choosing a conservatory, consider both the available space and how you want to use it.

A compact model may provide enough room for a small seating area and selected plants, while a larger conservatory can accommodate a dining table, lounge furniture or a combination of seating and greenery.

Measure the installation area carefully before ordering. Check the available width, depth and height, and take the position of doors, windows, gutters and downpipes into account. Allow enough room for movement and for doors to open properly.

The position in relation to the sun will also influence the temperature inside. A south-facing location can become very warm on sunny days, while an east- or west-facing position may provide more moderate sunlight during the day.

Foundation, assembly and ventilation

A stable, level foundation is essential for correct assembly and secure anchoring. Prepare the base before installation and make sure it is suitable for the dimensions and construction of the chosen conservatory.

Dancover conservatories are designed for self-assembly and are supplied with assembly instructions. The lightweight profiles and panels make the components easier to handle than traditional glass structures, but careful preparation is still important. Assembly will normally be easier with at least two people.

Ventilation is equally important in everyday use. Transparent panels allow sunlight to warm the interior, which can be an advantage in cooler weather but may result in high temperatures during summer. Open doors, windows or vents when necessary and consider suitable shading if the conservatory receives strong direct sunlight.

What should you consider before choosing a conservatory?

The right conservatory depends on the available space and how you plan to use it. Before making your choice, consider:

• whether the main purpose is seating, dining, plants or a combination
• how much floor space you need for furniture and movement
• sunlight and ventilation at the chosen location
• foundation and anchoring requirements
• access from the house, patio or garden
• seasonal temperature changes
• assembly requirements
• any applicable local building regulations

Accurate measurements and realistic expectations are important, especially because the conservatory is installed directly alongside the house.
